Server Reconfiguration
The implementation of a change to a server connected to the ebc domain. The server may provide one or more of the following services:
- shared printing
- file sharing
- application sharing
ebc servers may be administered by ebcIT or, alternatively, by iSERV. Moreover, parts of the servers change may involved network devices which are controlled by the Government's Integrated Network Provider. When servers are exernally controlled there is an additional step as the change is subject the the change management processes of the external provider.
- control impact of server modification to the ebc infrastructure through subjecting server changes to Change Management processes
- provide early indications of pending server problems through server event monitoring
- expedite modification of common server changes through identifying classes for 'pre-authorized approval'
- an RFC for a server modification will be acknowledged (by phone or email) by the Change Coordinator within 2 days of its' submission
- A simple configuration change will be completed within 10 days of submission of an RFC to the Change Coordinator, 95% of the time. The Change Coordinator considers the modification in the context of previous similar modifications and the overall risks posed to the ebc production environment.
- complex and emergency server changes are covered under Change Management - Standard and Emergency
- requests for a moves, adds or change (MAC) to a firewall will be acknowledged within 2 days unless an emergency situation, in which case acknowledgement will be within 15 minutes. If the firewall is hosted by ebc, the MAC will be completed within 12 business days from the time the RFC for the change was submitted to the ebc Change Coordinator, 95% of the time. For firewalls hosted by other service providers the MAC will be completed within 17 business days from the time an RFC was submitted to them, 95% of the time
- an IP address change will be acknowledged within 2 days of an RFC being submitted (to either ebcCAB or the CAB of an external provider hosting the server where the IP address change is to occur). For ebc-hosted servers the address change will be completed within 5 business days of the request, 95% of the time. For externally-hosted servers the request will be completed within 15 business days, 95% of the time.

How are we doing ?
- inform Service Desk of any Incidents resultant from Change
- facilitate access to onsite servers
- verify that server modification has been to line of business' satisfaction
- Administrative costs are paid through an annual appropriation to the ebcIT Division through the Ministry of Labour as negotiated during the annual government-wide fiscal budgeting process.
- Who and how are the servers paid for ????
- administrative costs of external service providers are paid by those organizations
- additional components added to a leased server must be purchased or added to the leased cost. The business unit will pay for any purchased components through normal Purchasing procedures
6. Dependencies
- iSERV administers a number of application and e-mail servers on behalf of ebc from the Downsview server farm
- it is Government policy to migrate all Windows NT servers to Windows 2000 servers. Windows Server 2003 is now available.
- it is ebc policy to create a single Windows 2000 domain consisting of the currently separate domains for the respective ministries - MOL, CBS, edt and Energy
- most servers are subject to replacement on a regular leasing schedule
Briefly describe leasing policy as it pertains to servers (eg., number of years servers are typically leased for
.
- an organization is allocated a descrete number of IP addresses for allocation and re-allocation
[Briefly describe how IP addresses are assigned and allocated]
- server capacity and availability monitoring and analysis
- lease management of servers. Servers are normally leased over a three year period
- developing server change management standard procedures
- server modification testing in a pre-production environment
- onsite server re-configuration
- service pack installation
